I have a fondness for weird holidays, and off and on throughout the years we’ve done special promotions and designs based around wacky special occasions. Since it's the start of a new year, I thought it would be fun to pick a bunch to do in 2015. The first one we’re celebrating is....drumroll.... Appreciate A Dragon Day on January 16.
This holiday was created in 2004 by Donika Paul to mark the release of her book, DragonSpell. The purpose of the day is to encourage people to explore the significance of these magical creatures in literature. She proposed celebrating it by picking your favourite literary dragon and paying homage it through some form of art form (e.g. drawing, poem, puppet show, sculpture, etc.).
If you're looking for books that feature dragons you won't be met with a short supply. There are a ton. If you wanna see a big list, check out this Wikipedia page. But for now here are 9 that you’ve probably heard of:
- Jabberwock from Lewis Carroll’s ‘Through The Looking-Glass’. (1871)
- Smaug from JRR Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ (1937)
- Falkor from Michael Ende’s ‘The Neverending Story’ (1979)
- Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal from George RR Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire series’ (1996)
- Norbit from JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ series (1997)
- Saphira Bjartskular from Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Cycle series (2002)Â
- Toothless from Cressida Cowell’s ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ series (2003)
So if you have a soft, scaly spot for dragons, January 16 would be the perfect day to get cozy and read (or reread) a book involving them. Of course, not everyone loves to read. If you’re in that camp then perhaps you could get cozy with the movie / television adaptation of one of the books listed above instead! Don't worry, I won't tell Ms. Paul! ;)

Gotta admit, this post has given me a hankering to watch The Neverending Story. Raise your hand if you also think Falkor is pretty creepy looking. Fox is still a little young for it, but I'm so excited to show him classics like this when he's older!

Are you a fan of dragons? Got a fave one? Tell me all about it! I'd also love to hear recommendations for books involving dragons. When I was going through that big list there were a few that sounded good. Of course most of my reading these days are picture books! (So if you have any dragon-related kid books to recommend, that works too!)
High fives, JenÂ
